Vitamin D for MS prevention – A recent article in the Vancouver Sun has announced that the MS Society has finally decided to tell their members about the value of MS for preventing and treating MS. https://vancouversun.com/uncategorized/staff/health-blogs/medicine-matters/at-risk-of-getting-or-have-multiple-sclerosis-load-up-on-vitamin-d-ms-society
I would note that Direct-MS has been pressing the MS Society for over 18 years to tell their members about vitamin D. For many years they resisted providing reliable, science-based information on vitamin D and I assume it was because of their close ties to the MS drug companies which see potentially effective, non-drug therapies as very bad for business.
Notably, even now MSSC’s information is not good in that they recommend only 600 IU/d up to a maximum of 4000 IU/d. Anything less than 2000 IU is likely to be ineffective and it is established that up to 10,000 IU/d is considered safe as demonstrated by a study funded by Direct-MS at U of T in 2007. I leave it to you to figure out why MSSC does not provide the best data on how to prevent and treat MS with vitamin D
In our 2004 publication “Multiple Sclerosis:The Alberta Disadvantage), http://www.direct-ms.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/AlbertaDisadvantage.pdf we discuss the role of vitamin D in MS and provide science-based recommendations for vitamin D intake to protect against MS (see page 28 for the chart). The bottom line is it essential for anyone susceptible for MS to always maintain a blood level of vitamin D of at least 100nmol/l and for most adults that will take 4000 IU a day, and definitely not 600 IU/d as recommended by MSSC.

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world with about 80,000 individuals diagnosed, as the MS Society of Canada weighs in
