Sal Sclafani, MD - "For my 2011 birthday, a patient and her husband gave me the gift of a reflex hammer. At first I decided I would create a stand for it and display it on my desk, but I couldn’t decide on a design. So I decided to use it instead.
You have to realize that it was about 40 years since my last neurological exam in med school! So how did I relearn what I had been taught?
Yep! The internet. There are many educational tools for medical students on performing neurological examinations. So between some books and lots of videos, I began to perform exams, clearly warning patients that I was beginning anew. They were most understanding and patient with me. I feel pretty good now. I have had some patients who were neurologists and they gave me pointers. And now it is part of my consultation. After all, its not like I have a neurologist partner like Zamboni does, in Dr Salvi.
I would however predict that the majority of IRs are NOT going to get into this. I have known some neuro IRs who do this, but most IRs have not restricted their work to CCSVI as I have. They have other things to do.....
We really need neurologist partners."
