HOPEWELL – The community is rallying around a Foxbrook woman who is hoping to improve her quality of life through the Liberation
treatment for multiple sclerosis with an all-day fundraiser on Nov. 6.

Nancy Caddell was diagnosed in June 1990 with primary progressive MS, which has gradually taken her life away. She suffers from severe
fatigue, pain, bladder irregularities, overall weakness, lack of

mobility, severe spasticity, memory problems and balance and

co-ordination difficulties. The MS has left her with very little in the

way of quality of life.

“When I say I do nothing, I mean I do nothing,” Caddell said. “Basically I just sit all day and read, watch television or talk to
someone if they happen to be here. That’s basically my life.”

In January, the 52-year-old will be travelling to Albany, New York, for the Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency Liberation treatment,
which is not available in Canada.

The treatment opens blocked veins in the neck and many people who have received it say they’ve seen improvements almost immediately. While
it’s not a cure, many MS patients say they’ve gained back the last 10

years of their life, she said.

“I’m hopeful – I’m not going into this with high expectations, but I want to take that chance,” she explained.

The treatment is pricey, however, and will cost between $10,000 and $20,000, depending on exactly what Caddell needs done. Her friends have
thrown their support behind her and have organized an all-day fundraiser

on Nov. 6 to help raise the money she needs.

Debra Fraser, one of the organizers, says the day will begin with a breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m., followed by a meet and greet from 2 to 5
p.m.

“We’re hoping she will be able to be at that,” Fraser said.

A dance, featuring music by the Homegrown band, will run from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

All day, a silent auction will run as well.

“We’ve had a lot of things donated, like a quilt, gift certificates from a lot of major businesses in Pictou County and an original painting
of the Hopewell Footbridge by Dan Munro,” Fraser said. “There will be a

variety of stuff for all ages and interests.

All events will be held at the Eureka Fire Hall and all donations will be gratefully accepted.

Caddell says she’s touched by the efforts her friends are making to help her raise the money.

“I’m absolutely thrilled – I have no words, I’m just taken aback by all of this,” she said. “I talked to my friends one night and the next
day they got ahold of somebody and things were on their way. I have

awesome friends.”
