Denise Graff I'm heading in Monday morning with the Rockstar to reopen my veins. I'm not worried at all about the procedure. I am worried about the blood thinners I have to inject for 20 days. I have no experience with blood thinners. I already know I don't handle doing injections on myself very well. I've lined up moral support th...ough. Now, would really like to hear from anyone that has done the blood thinner injections post angio. What should I watch for? What helps? What else should I ask Dr?

    • Joy Cornwell Gotchnik Denise, stay away from sharp kitchen knives! I cut my thumb and it took over 45 mins for it to stop bleeding. It didn't want to heal either as long as I was doing the injections.....................The injections are simple, you do it in your belly fat. They should show you where to do it. I actually got an injection kit in the hosp after the angio. Just plan on having lots of bruises from it too. You also should only use Tylenol while on blood thinners if at all possible.

    • Denise Graff Thanks Joy. Any side effects? What was in injection kit? I'll be at a treatment outpatient facility, no hospital so will see what they do beyond showing me. That they did mention they will do.

I had the pleasure of administering Clexane injections for 14 days. Not fun, and sort of disgusting to see the bruising, but you do what you gotta do.

We seemed to fare best when we got it over reasonably quickly. You don't want to force the... juice in too fast, just be smooth and constant.See More

    • Cindi Hubbard Murrah You need a PCP/Local DR to check your INR levels every few days to make sure your blood is thin enough or not too thin. I took pills so did not have to do the shots. But I did take rebif shots every other day a few years ago. Once you start giving yourself shots it becomes second nature. Mostly side effects are fatigue if the blood gets to thin and you will bruise very easy. Like Joy said stay away from sharp objects!! Very excited for you!!!

    • Joy Cornwell Gotchnik The kit has instructions on how to give injection, a sharps container and then a thing to keep track of where you do your injections. I would think they would at least have this for you. I bruised really easily the whole time and I still have some of the bruises remaining even tho I've been done for over 2 weeks now.

    • Joy Cornwell Gotchnik I didn't have any bloodwork run while I was on it. Are you doing the shots once a day or twice?

    • Judy Filipkowski Good fortune to you! I have no problem injecting as necessary because "I had to". I only did Heparin for one day but was on Copaxone (one a day) and Avonex (one a week) for years. Now using Plavix which is a pill. So simple.

I assume Denise that they just gave you a low molecular weight heparin given subcutaneous in your belly fat once daily. It is easy and you will bruise locally in that spot that you inject and you probably will not have many side effects oth...er than a slight increased risk of bleeding. They give you a large pamphlet of all the side effects in the box with the prefilled syringes that are ready to go. You should get your CBC and differential checking weekly or so to check in on your platelets and hemoglobin. It will be easy and if you do not like doing the injections make your local GP or nurse at GP's office will do it. Good luck?.See More

    • Denise Graff Silly thing to think of, but can you drink on blood thinners?
about an hour ago · ·

    • Judy Filipkowski I did and I do but I didn't ask anyone - just did what I wanted to do. I guess you'll need to check out the details of the drug that you will be taking if you are worried.

    • Bart Locanthi You're just talking about the post-op injections - Dr S isn't talking about putting you on coumadin, right?

      And yes you can drink.

    • Denise Manley Denise the injections are simple subcutaneous injections done in the belly fat. they are simple and don't really hurt, just a pinch. You will do fine.
