CCSVI and Multiple Sclerosis
Mon, 3/28: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Categorical Course
CC 06
McCormick West
Room: W375AB
Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) is a recently described entity affecting venous blood flow in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Early reports indicate that this entity leads to abnormalities of the internal jugular and/or azygos veins and that endovascular treatment of these veins can lead to symptomatic improvement in MS patients. This course will review the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of CCSVI in MS patients.
Objective:
At the end of this session, the learner should be able to:
1. Describe chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) and its possible role in multiple sclerosis
2. Identify the role of noninvasive imaging in diagnosing CCSVI
3. Review the role of jugular and azygos vein angioplasty or stent placement in the treatment of CCSVI
4. Summarize potential complications associated with endovascular treatment of CCSVI
