Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease. An Italian study seems
to offer a cure. Small wonder that sufferers are queuing for the
operation that it suggests – and that some surgeons are offering to
perform it and offer “liberation” – for a fee. But are the hopes and
operations justified? As Stephanie Kovalchik reports, a statistical
contradiction at the heart of the theory has still to be resolved.
