The province of Manitoba has combined interests with the province of Saskatchewan to trial the controversial CCSVI or "Liberation" treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Each province has committed $5 million to embark on a clinical trial for the surgery that is already available in countries like Australia, the United States and Scotland.

Duncan Scott of the Manitoba division of the M.S. Society says this commitment means the province has recognized M.S. as a top priority in health care.

Stokes notes the reaction to the news has been mixed, as some sufferers have wanted this procedure to be available in Canada for some time now, while others will await the findings of trials like these to make their decision.

In Manitoba the clinical trials are being managed by the Manitoba Health Research Council .

No date has been set at this time as to when the clinical trials will begin as researchers are now in the process of being selected.
