According to the National MS Society, multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological illness that affects the central nervous system. Immunological, environmental, genetic and infectious agents are thought to possibly have a role. MS is more common in women and is most commonly diagnosed in those aged 20-50. Symptoms include fatigue, numbness, problems with balance and coordination, pain, depression, emotional changes and changes in cognitive ability. Less commonly, suffers of MS may experience seizures, headaches, hearing loss, speech problems or itchiness. There are approved drugs that have been shown to relieve symptoms and slow progression of the disease.

Famous people with MS include Neil Cavuto, financial journalist for Fox News channel; Annette Funicello, former Mouseketeer; and Barbara Jordan, Congresswoman.
