This is one for you if you like conspiracy theories. I read an article talking about Biogens new drug Frampyradine now being approved in Canada. I did a comparison search on line comparing it to 4-Aminopyradine a compound drug I have been taking for years. Frampyra the shortened names is supposed to have a slower time released and can reduce the chances of seizures in higher dosages. Interested I ask me doctor for a referral, she will pass along my request.

I receive a timely response from Biogen. Frampyra is available but not yet covered by provincial medical. Your private insurance provider will have to help or you would be stuck with $500 + per month cost of the drug. Even though I know the answer I had to ask about compassionate refunding (not available) you may qualify for financial assistance. While discussing the benefits of the drug I was told that at the end of the month4-aminopyradine would no longer be available for dispensing in Canada.

Concerned I called my pharmacy (aminopyradine is only available at compound pharmacies). What I found out was deceitful, coincidence and or despicable. Aminopyradine will still be available in Canada to suggest otherwise is a lie! Here's the kicker my pharmacy as not been able to make the drug because they ran out of the ingredients two weeks ago. After extensive searching they were able to secure an out of country supplier. They were forced to pay more and purchase a larger amount, years worth. What does this mean? It will be 5-7 weeks before they are able to fill prescriptions. This leaves hundreds of patients with out medication. I tried other pharmacies, no one can find the required ingredients.

So did Biogen buy up all the ingredients before they announced they are now selling the alternate drug with practically all the same ingredients? Or is it purely coincidence most regular suppliers ran out? Or were regular suppliers told to stop selling? You be the judge. All I know it effects the well being of some patients. Do you think big pharma cares?
