Prof Mat Daemen The Keynote Address for the ISNVD 2015 Conference titled “The Heart-brain Axis: An Overlooked Cause of Brain Aging." will be delivered by Mat Daemen, Professor of Pathology at the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam . His areas of expertise include vascular pathology, atherosclerosis, plaque (in)stability/rupture.
Prof. Daemen is also the Project Leader at the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht, Netherlands. Prof. Daemen’s research at the institute is focusing on:
"vascular biology of both large and small vessels including vascular development, vascular remodeling, predisposition to vascular disease, mechanism of vascular occlusion and vascular medicine”. http://www.cardiorisk.eu/en/cardiovascular-research-institute-maastricht-netherlands.php
Prof. Daemen’s article “The Heart and the brain: an intimate and underestimated relation” was published in 2013 in the Netherlands Heart Journal http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3547419/. The article details the clinical and social need to understand the important relations between the brain and the heart.
QUOTE:
A relatively underestimated example of the heart's effects on the brain is the link between dysfunction of the heart and brain. This may become a very important health care problem in the near future, as both cardiac dysfunction and progressive loss of congnitive functioning are prominent features of ageing. The apparent lack of appreciation of the link between cardiac and brain (dys)function is probably due to monodisciplinary approach by cardiologists and neurologists and by the reductionist approach of modern medical research. Yet it is time for a more integrative view to the heart-brain connection as recent data indicate that cardiovascular conditions contribute to cognitive impairment.
