My studies and my ideas about multiple sclerosis - workshop of Dr. Paolo Zamboni for "Horizons in Biology and Medicine" April 11, 2014

"When I watched a slide with a sample of the lesion from multiple sclerosis have been impressed by the morphological profile of the residents venules, which reminded me a lot from those observed in patients with primary disease of the venous vessels. From here, I hypothesized that the basis of multiple sclerosis could be an important involvement of the venous system. From here, started it all". Said Dr. Paolo Zamboni on the sidelines of the meeting sponsored by the Class of Experimental Sciences of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa, on the occasion of the seminar series "Horizons in Biology and Medicine", entitled "The extracranic cerebral venous system: a potential contributor to neurodegeneration?". Dr. Paolo Zamboni said that "the veins and lymphatic vessels are poorly studied in medicine, but are very important to ensure that, even at the peripheral level, vitality and proper cell function". "Most of the scholars - he explained - considering the function of the venous system of the cerebral and spinal district doesn't affect the activity of the nervous tissue, a tissue from the complex metabolic activity. Although there is little scientific evidence on the trophic effects of improper drainage of blood, this bias has discouraged researchers from dwelling on the study of the role of functional abnormalities of the veins, the same that I observe with wonder in patients with multiple sclerosis. In the extracranial veins of patients with multiple sclerosis are observed membranous structures that slow up to block the blood flow from the brain. Initially thought that the use of a stent could be enough to restore the blood flow from the brain and, for some patients, this approach has resulted in an important improvement of the quality of life. Later, on the basis of scientific experience in recent years, I have found that there isn't an effective approach in all patients, but this finding doesn't exclude that there are alterations in the venous circulation at the base of multiple sclerosis". "The international scientific community is constituted by scientists who continually pose questions which seek to respond with the application of a method. I myself constantly questioning me on the phenomena that continue to observe, and I would be happy if you could share peacefully with other colleagues, experts in the field , such as neurologists and neuroscientists in order to speed up the process of investigation, resolving doubts and, in the best cases, arrive at the patient's bedside with more shared certainty". "However I distance myself from the commercial use and without control you are doing my hypothesis and my studies at private health facilities. I am deeply saddened by the gossip media fueled by inaccuracies rather than scientific evidence. The evidence is continually entrusted to the attention of the international scientific community". "The venous disease despite having a morphological early onset, results in a functional disorder after many years of clinical silence. This is demonstrated at the level of the lower limbs, and I think it is not excluded at the level of the extracranial venous districts". "Dr. Zamboni - concluded Vincenzo Lionetti, coordinator of the series of seminars - very reminiscent of Ulysses, who felt the mandate of chasing the horizon in order to ensure a breakthrough in consciousness. It is striking that, despite the results are not always confirmed, but promptly communicated to the international scientific community, some of the experts in the field have preferred an abrupt closure rather than a continuous dialogue. The world of research listens for possible developments and calls for careful, as early surveillance of themselves".
