ANOMALIES OF VENOUS RETURN.
ANATOMICAL AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL BASIS. PRELIMINARY STUDY.
Introduction: There is an anatomical and functional continuity among the intracranial venous system, the spine and the azygos system that finally communicate the pelvis to the skull. These ones achieve preferential flow compensating system cava obstructions. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the correct description of vertebral and azygos venous system showing the relationships that it has with the brain venous system.
Materials and Methods: (n = 10) corpses, (n = 8) fetuses at term (n = 2) adults were used. The corpses were refilled with latex. Batson technique was used for adult corpses. The preparations were fixed with 5% formaldehyde v / v, discussed, dissected and photographed. An imaging correlation was performed, objectifying through the contrasted phlebography where (n = 25) has included patients with thrombosis of the dig system, all of them belonging to the Lymphology and Phlebology Service of the Central Military Hospital.
Results: The intrinsic relationship between the vertebral venous plexus and the azygos system was shown with the intracranial venous system. Acting as vicarious circuit against pathological situations, not only at the cranial level compensating the brain venous drainage but also at the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic level.
Conclusions: The vertebral venous system along the spine interconnects the pelvis with the cranial cavity. Next to the azygos system can meet the main drainage path. Currently, the relationship with the veins of the brain becomes relevant after P. Zamboni’s researches, who has presented the concept of cerebrospinal venous insufficiency as a cause of multiple sclerosis. In this one, the substitute drainage pathways, mainly the vertebral plexus, and their relationship with the azygous system generate a bypass blocked veins. This present concept can be extrapolated to the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic cavity.
