In Rome this week, the XXXIII National Congress of the Italian Society for Angiology and Vascular Medicine held an important conference on CCSVI.  Dr. Zamboni opened the proceedings with an interesting reading entitled "The Pathophysiology of cerebral venous return."  Dr. Zamboni's studies have given prestige to Italian research, despite the severe shortage of funding and indifference of MS institutions.

Also presenting were Dr. Amitrano of Avellino on CCSVI: Evidence, Dr. Mancini of Naples on Cerebral Circulation in pwMS-the value of doppler with contrast, Dr. Cacciaguerra of Catania on CCSVI: parallels of diagnostics in doppler ultrasound and phlebology, Dr. Bavera of Milano on the Correlation of CCSVI in MS-results of a study of 560 patients with follow-up pre and post angioplasty, and Dr. Alessandro of Foggia on CCSVI in MS: Personal Experience.

At the end of the presentations there was an interesting debate among the doctors present in the crowded room, on this topic which is revolutionizing our knowledge of MS, a seriously debilitationg disease that affects 60,000 Italians.

It is now absolutely desirable for greater collaboration between neurologists, MS specialists and vascular specialists who understand how to treat CCSVI--in the interest of patients and their families.
