For one multiple sclerosis resident in the Hat the waiting for her liberation treatment is almost over.
Beth Cheverie leaves for Costa Rica on Sunday and the CCSVI procedure is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 16.
The treatment, not available for MS patients in Canada or sanctioned by Health Canada, is called cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) treatment. It is also known as the "liberation treatment" and was pioneered by Italian physician Dr. Paolo Zamboni, in Nov. 2009, who concluded there was a connection between blood flow to the brain and the symptoms of MS.
For Beth, who began trying to raise the money required for the procedure last fall, there is a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
"My imagination is working overtime," said Cheverie on Wednesday afternoon. "People tell me the procedure will be easy but I guess it is fear of the unknown."
Her expectations from CCSVI are measured.
"I'm hoping for any improvement," said Cheverie. "More mobility would be great. I have to use a walker all the time now."
Cheverie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002 and began using a walker to aid her balance about 18 months ago. She has to be constantly aware of where her feet are placed and says negotiating her way across the room requires effort and planning. She says when she has to make her way to the back of a crowded restaurant she's very much aware of the difficulties she faces.
Cheverie says she knows her husband Blaine, who always helps her to see the funny side of life, is hoping the liberation treatment will bring relief for her.
The News will follow her progress and bring you an update when she returns.
