Study Links Multiple Sclerosis to Blood-Flow Condition in the Brain

The findings of a new research conducted by the researchers from the University of Buffalo have unveiled that the people suffering from multiple sclerosis have a problem in blood-flow out of their brains.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease that causes severe damage to the brain and spinal cord of its patients. Characterized by muscle spasms, sensitivity losses, visual problems, body aches etc, MS has no known cure till now.

In the study that recruited some 250 MS patients along with other 250 non- MS patients it was found that as many as 89% of the subjects with MS were suffering from a medical condition in which the discrepancies regarding blood-flow in the brains are observed.

In fact, 38% also reported for the medical condition called CCSVI, in which the vein that is responsible for the blood flow is narrowed.

A genetic association was also observed when 22% of the control group was found to be suffering from CCSVI.

Though the findings have confused the researchers who are now speculating that whether the CCSVI is the symptoms or the cause of the MS, it has been confirmed that there is a strong association between both.

Dr. Robert Zivadinov, who led the study, claimed: “The fact that almost one in four (subjects) has CCSVI and has no MS, and the fact that almost 45 per cent of our subjects who had other neurologic diseases had CCSVI, clearly puts a question whether CCSVI is the cause of this disease”.
