I have been sharing my views on jugular stents recently. I think it is important make clear that I am speaking about open jugular veins. If the jugular vein is NOT scarred shut...DO NOT stent it!

When the jugular is scarred shut we are faced with a dilema. Balloon angioplasty of veins is not a great procedure as I am sure you have heard me say. In fact this is why at Synergy we make such emphasis emphasis on the valve. (For that matter you will probably never, ever see us treating a renal vein. It's almost more likely to harm a patient than help.) Stenting jugulars is not what we want to do but we have limited options with a scarred shut jugular. This is in fact why I have really limited my treatment of jugular occlusions to those less than 4 cm in length.
