Canadian MS patients… a cash cow for neurologists and huge pharmaceutical companies?

My very personal thoughts…

As the CCSVI treatment coordinator for Dr. Moguel’s Clinics of the Heart in Los Cabos and Cozumel Mexico I was amazed when I began this most fulfilling job, that almost all of the patients that traveled to Mexico for treatment were from Canada, and travel they did… This was in June of 2010…why are so many of these folks from Canada? I asked…thus began my education on this sad, sad subject…I learned that neurologists who like all other physicians took a sacred oath to put their patient’s health and well being at the forefront of all other considerations were flat out against the CCSVI angioplasty procedure, which is a very simple and safe outpatient treatment…why? Pharmaceutical companies are not at all interested in losing the revenue. While sitting in the lobby of the hotel where our  hundreds of patients stayed before and after treatment I was privileged to meet the most wonderful people I have ever known, and after 35 years in the hospitality  industry I have met many, many people. MS patients, their families and caregivers shared their stories with me…each one different yet so much alike…all were diagnosed by their neurologist, they tell me it’s usually a cold and detached affair, basically a slow death sentence…no hope given… only a prescription for a medication smorgasbord intended to mask the effects, to disguise the devastating symptoms of the disease and of course to stream more revenue to the already bloated coffers of big pharma and I suspect to  motivate the neurology industry to keep up the “good work” prescribing more and more useless medication.  My education could not be complete without a crash course on the Canadian health system or social medicine, an otherwise great system that has all but forgotten and abandoned the plight of people that suffer the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis leaving the to fend for themselves and of course the diabolical connection between the neurology and pharmaceutical industries. I never thought that I was capable of crying as much as I have just being exposed to the incredibly brave people that I have met, the fortunate ones that were able to travel to Mexico for treatment and the many who were not able to usually because of the affordability…spending endless hours on the phone with hapless people desperately seeking treatment, trying to find ways to make the treatment available to them,  I was usually unsuccessful at it and this really tore into my soul like a hot knife…I believe that those people who want to come to our clinics in Los Cabos or Cozumel to be treated by Dr. Moguel and his dedicated team and can afford to do so should, the sooner they do, the faster they will begin enjoying a better quality of life, knowing Dr. Moguel and his team at The Clinics of the Heart, I can assure anyone that no better care can be found anywhere in the world, but  those less fortunate who cannot afford the private medical care offered abroad should be able to receive the treatment at a local hospital and should be entitled to the same quality of life. Only when overwhelming numbers of successful treatments have been reached will the Canadian health authorities succumb to the pressure and allow the treatment to be performed as a matter of routine. MS patients who are waiting for this to happen are taking a much bigger risk of a worsening condition, sometimes with irreversible damage that could be prevented if treated in a timely fashion. The FDA “risk warning”  was designed to frighten people into submission and to protect their big pharma masters and to keep them from seeking a treatment that they know is effective because they also know that as soon as critical mass of successfully treated CCSVI  is reached their cash cow will die.
