Dr. Paula Grammas, Professor of Neurology at Texas Tech University and Executive Director at the Garrison Institute of Aging, was the opening keynote speaker. She discussed the importance of cerebral endothelial cells in the development of Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. Grammas highlighted evidence in human studies which points to the involvement of blood vessels and endothelial cells in the development of Alzheimer's--stating that loss of neurons is key, yet all research has focused on the plaques. Researchers have studied the neuro part of the equation to the exclusion of the vascular involvement in the disease. She presented compelling evidence, which we'll include in our interview with Dr. Grammas. A great start to the conference!
