Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has lasting implications on brain health. As Dr. Nedergaard explained to me last week, TBI changes the ability of the glial cells and the glymphatic system to cleanse the brain. The cleansing process is slowed down and metabolites, proteins and inflammation are increased. TBI has been linked to ALS, MS, Parkinson's, dementia, Alzheimer's and CTE. The NFL is only the beginning. The good news is that researchers, like the Nedergaard lab, are looking at ways to heal the brain and reduce ongoing damage after TBI. We're getting there.
