THE OXIDASE ACTIVlTY OF SERUM CERULOPLASMIN IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WOJCIECH CENDROWSKI and WACLAWA SZAJBEL INTRODUCTION Enzymatic activity of a number of oxidases in white matter, cerc- brospinal fluid and serum of multiple sclerotics is still a subject of research, because of its eventually significant role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Among these enzymes appears ceruloplasmin, a metalo- proteid with molecular weight 151.000, which occurs in serum alfaz- globulins and contains 0,34 per cent of copper, Abood et a f . (19571, Deufsch (1964), Houchin (1958), Markowifz e f a[ . (1955), Morel1 & Scheinberg (1960), Osaki e f al. (1964) and others. According to Jamie- son ( 1965), structural features of human ceruloplasmin adhere more closely to the pattern found in the majority of glycoproteins. This en- zyme catalyses the oxidation of poly-phenols, diamines and ascorbic acid. Some compounds as CN-, N3- and OCN- have inhibitory effects on the activity of ceruloplasmin. The biological function of ceruloplasmin is not completely understood although possibly it takes part in the ex- change of copper between the blood stream and different tissues. Since previous publications on the level of serum ceruloplasmin in multiple sclerosis are contradictory, dysproteinemia is a frequent find- ing in this disease, and the concentration of serum copper is of greater fluctuation than in control subjects, an attempt has been made â??to eva- luate the activity of ceruloplasmin in multiple sclerosis. The estimation of ceruloplasmin level may be important for better understanding of copper metabolism in multiple sclerosis. The copper plays a part in hio- logical respiration of myelin sheaths. I t is worth noting that in a previous paper on enzymatic activity of some transaminases and copper oxidase among patients with multiple sclerosis, in 3 cases lower levels of ceruloplasmin than in healthy sub- jects have been found, Cendrowski (1961). ....Learn more/transcript: https://dokumen.tips/documents/the-oxidase-activity-of-serum-ceruloplasmin-in-multiple-sclerosis.html
