"It has been difficult to study hypoxia in the brain due to measurement limitations but new technology such as frequency domain near-infrared spectroscopy (fdNIRS) systems can be applied to quantify microvascular hemoglobin saturation (StO2) as a potential marker of hypoxia in MS. We undertook this study to determine if reduced StO2 is a common component of the pathophysiology of MS" Hypoxia (low oxygen) is associated with many brain disorders as well as inflammation, but the lack of widely available technology has limited our ability to study hypoxia in human brain.
