CCSVI aangetoond bij 97% van de patiënten.

Correlatie tussen plaats plus ernst van extracraniële (buiten de schedel
gelegen) veneuze (aderlijke) letsels en de klinische status van MS (met
andere woorden: er is met een venogram gekeken waar letsels zaten in de
afvoeraderen buiten de schedel en hoe ernstig die waren en toen gekeken
of dat een patroon vormde met de beperkingen die mensen hadden door de
MS, red.)
Achtergrond: men denkt dat CCSVI een rol speelt in de pathogenesis
(ontstaan van de ziekte) van MS.
Doel: vaststellen van de correlatie tussen patronen van veneuze letsels
en de klinische karakteristieken van MS.
Methode:plaats en mate van veneuze blokkades opsporen bij MS-ers. Er
zijn 381 patiënten met kathetervenografie geëvalueerd. Analyse van de
klinische ernst van de MS omvatte Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29
(MSIS-29), chronische vermoeidheid en hitte intolerantie (de MSIS-29 is
een 29-item vragenlijst die ontwikkeld werd om de fysische en
psychologische impact van MS op het leven van de patiënten te meten en
dit vanuit het perspectief van de patiënt zelf, red.)
Resultaten: bij 97,1% van de patiënten werden veneuze blokkades
gevonden.
Afwijkingen waren ernstiger bij oudere patiënten. Er werd geen
correlatie gevonden tussen de duur van de ziekte en de ernst van de
pathologische vaatafwijkingen. Patiënten die op jongere leeftijd MS
ontwikkelden, hadden minder ernstige veneuze letsels.
Er werden significante correlaties gevonden tussen de ernst en plaats
van de veneuze letsels en de klinische last volgens de MSIS-29
vragenlijst en chronische vermoeidheid maar niet met hitte intolerantie.
Conclusie: prevelentie van CCSVI bij MS-patiënten is erg hoog. (De
prevalentie van een aandoening is het aantal gevallen per duizend of per
honderdduizend op een specifiek moment in de bevolking.)
Indirecte gegevensanalyse wijst erop dat veneuze afwijkingen
waarschijnlijk aangeboren zijn, langzaam verergeren, maar het is
onwaarschijnlijk dat deze veroorzaakt worden door MS.
De plaats en ernst van de afwijkingen bepalen significant het verloop
van de ziekte. Desalniettemin is het niet aannemelijk dat de afwijkingen
direct MS opwekken, er kan een andere factor zijn die tot de ziekte
aanzet.
