Multiple Sclerosis patients in Manitoba received some welcome information Tuesday night.

Maples Surgical Centre will soon be providing follow-up care for Liberation Treatment patients, said officials.

On their own dime, patients will be able to get regular ultrasounds to make sure blood is flowing properly.

"To bring a service like this home to Manitobans is unique and very important," says Dwayne Venter of Maples Surgical Centre.

Manitoba doesn't offer the controversial Liberation Treatment, but many Manitobans have travelled abroad to receive the procedure, which opens blocked veins. Until now, finding follow up care has been extremely difficult.

Officials with Maples Surgical Centre say having the service in Manitoba will cut out a lot of travel, and related expenses, for patients. The care will also be more accessible to those living in neighbouring provinces.

"It's going to make everyone's lives a whole lot easier. Including mine, because I'm due for a follow up ultrasound," says MS patient Sharlene Garlinski.

The service is expected to be available by next month. Officials did not say Tuesday night how much the care will cost.
